Next time you are talking with a supplier, ask them if they believe in the product or service they are providing.
To answer anything but ‘yes’, would be very unwise. Anyone remember Gerald Ratner?
That’s right. Most company reps, wishing to avoid career-suicide, will always answer in the affirmative. They believe passionately in their product, and how it can make the world a better place etc.
So, do they use it themselves?
Is it used internally at their company?
Do they ‘eat their own dog food’?

I have been surprised many times over the years how often they don’t. Often, client records, data and numbers are routinely dumped into MS Office and cut & pasted, chopped and emailed around the various stakeholders. Externally, the sales reps are advocating fancy analytics, Business Intelligence, Predictive Modelling, Data Marts, Dashboards, KPIs, you name it!
Ask yourself, and more importantly ask them, why. I suspect there is a disconnect between the marketing messaging and reality. Perhaps their product is complicated to set up and use. Perhaps it requires an army of IT folk to make it work and keep it running. Perhaps the end users hate its clunky look and feel. An exaggeration? Not at all. I have personally seen all of this.
