Shh…!
Listen.
What is one thing we probably do not do enough of? Yes, that’s right – listening!
In a conversation, many people only wait for a convenient space so they can interject the next thing they want to say. They pause, mostly for breath, and then begin the next verbal onslaught. That’s not listening.
Somebody, undoubtedly very wise, once said we have two ears but only one mouth. That should be the ratio of listening to speaking.
In social situations, not listening is rude but in business, it can be downright dangerous. I think we can agree it is always good to listen to your customers. What are their challenges, their pain, their issues? What keeps them awake at night? Ironically, people love to buy things, particularly if it will help them in some way, but they hate to be sold to.
Why spend large sums on overpriced ‘consultants’, focus groups, studies, market research, web-traffic analysis, and goodness-knows what else? You have the very best market research group right in front of you – your customers. Their insights and observations are pertinent, and grounded in genuine experience of your company and its products and services. The ‘Voice of the Customer’ takes many forms, not just what is physically said. A customer’s spending patterns, timing, seasonal habits. Or has a customer recently stopped responding or replying to your emails? Hmm…
Here at Assyst, we do our very best to listen. At every opportunity, we ask our customers what they would like to see in our products and services. What do they think of our service? What do they particularly like and (gasp) not like?
In fact, we always ask for feedback when we send out a newsletter and we ask for customer stories. In case any of these initiatives slipped through the net, feel free to contact us at any time and tell us what you think.
And whatever you do, keep your ear to the ground!
